The Grumpy Old Nurse

When I am old ...

"When I am old, I will wear purple

And a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me

And I will spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and candles, and say we have no money for butter

I will sit down on the pavement when I am tired

And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells

And run my stick along public railings

And make up for the sobriety of my youth

I will go out in slippers in the rain

And pick the flowers in other peoples gardens

And learn to spit"

Jenny Joseph

And when I am old ...

"I will cancel my registration

And  live in a home for retired nurses and write a blog

I will challenge the unchallenged

And ask awkward questions

I will speak my mind

And strive to influence others to act sensibly

I will speak up and out for General Practice Nurses"

The Grumpy Old Nurse

PS ...

And spend my pension on gin

And learn to spit

About

Just over 16,000 of them work in GP surgeries across the UK

General Practice Nurses are the unsung heroes of the NHS

They often call themselves "Jacks of all Trades" but some of the BEST respiratory and diabetes nurses that I have ever met have been working as practice nurses in GP surgeries

SINCE YOU ARE HERE RIGHT NOW

Something tells me that you are looking for something

BUT ...

MAYBE YOU ...

Don't really know what you are looking for?

Feel isolated; practice nursing can be a very lonely place especially if you are the only nurse at the surgery?

MAYBE YOU ...

Wish more people could related to what you are trying to do (other people are supportive but don't quite "get it"?

Just feel stuck?

MAYBE YOU ...

Feel frustrated at not having enough time to do your job properly?

Feel pressurised into taking on tasks, procedures and reviews without appropriate training?

MAYBE YOU ...

Just want to have a good old moan or a good old laugh?

NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE ON YOUR PRACTICE NURSE JOURNEY

You are now in the right place because trust me my friend ...

 I HAVE BEEN THERE

Now, around these parts, I have a few core beliefs ...

I believe that

General Practice Nursing is one of the toughest jobs in nursing

I believe that

General Practice Nursing is one of the most rewarding jobs in nursing

I believe that

General Practice Nurses have an inherent duty of care towards their patients

I believe that

The role of the General Practice Nurse deserves more respect and recognition

And, if I am being honest, I also believe that you should never trust a man in a tank top

General Practice Nurses have got a really important job to do and I am here to speak up for them in a way that they may not feel able to do so themselves

This is me, the Grumpy Old Nurse

I am dedicated to supporting, promoting and developing the role of the General Practice Nurse

Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, really simple, that's creativity!

Charles Mingus

"We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind"

We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering ...

You ask, what is our aim?  I can answer that in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival"

Sir Winston Churchill

So with no more ado, let's have a go at this blogging thing ...

WARNING:

As well as discussing some serious stuff, I one hundred per cent intend to look at the funny side of life, death, (otherwise known as the menopause), and any other things that might just make you giggle as it is more than well known that LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE and life is hard enough!
